Also all you Toyota owners have a look at top gear Bolivia!
Also try googling Toyota land cruiser problems and there are pages and pages from stuck sunroofs to broken diffs!!!
My 200tdi over 20000 still going strong and only needed recon main gearbox.
Work td5 110 hi cap 170000 replaced front cv joints. still going strong.
Discovery 300tdi auto150000 miles and needed head gasket.
ALL the land rovers above have needed other parts like brakes and tyres but thats wearing parts.
I should also say that I have never been stranded on the side of a road in any land rover I have owened!
In my experience with land rovers I would not call them unreliable.
@ TheUwat – That is a very bold statement
to make …LR the King of 4×4 vehicles…
Eina!! Is it better than a Unimog as well?
LR is not a bad 4×4 at all. The reliability
issues unfortunately makes it an absolute non starter. 2nd Hand dealers
show rooms are over crowded with LR`s.
On the other hand, used Land Cruisers are like hens teeth – just not available anywhere.
Land rover are infact king of 4×4 vehicles, they r indeed a legend but nolegend lasts for ever and i must say that toyota has developed some excelent choices such as this land cruiser.
All the noise made by LR owners is under
standable. They have to defend (haha) the
defender`s claim of 4 x 4 x far (which every
one knows is not true). Also, it`s a matter of loyalty and pride, rather than admitting to horrific reliability problems, or applying good common sense. My SADF LR broke so many sideshafts that I panicked when one lasted 6 months. All my friends have experienced electrical, gearbox, drivetrain or engine problems. LR defender drive
feels like a 7 ton tipper truck.
I’d rather have the more reliable and dependable one…
Not the one that made Lucas the Prince of Darkness. Or the one with weak non hypoid and spiral bevel axles… And no Buick engines that love to slip liners…
ii agre if u want to go to the end of the world but a landrover if u want to go there and back buy a toyota.. best jeep about .. no doubt .. they piss on a ladrover
I’m sure that in the LR forums the owners are very dedicated to LR vehicles and love it very much. It’s just that one of my college professor who travels a lot said that the last time he was in Africa(don’t remember which part of) in 2007 that he mostly saw Toyota and Mercedes-Benz. There wasn’t much LR like there were in the early 70′s and 80′s. Just wondering why? Thanks for the AULRO info, will check it.
As i said earlier if you want to get a true indication of the reliability of LRs go to LR forums such as AULRO. JD power survey is not nearly as informative as info gained from long term owners. Im sure if you do your research you will find that the great majority of LR owners are very happy with their vehicles.
I’m pretty sure if one day automakers decide to take out luxury such as AC,stereo system and cruise control with ride comfort their 4×4 vehicles will not sell well at all. It’s how much consumers’ expectation has changed over the years.
Like I said you are one of the few who has experienced no problems with your LR but according to consumer’s review the LR is rated worst than most cars for reliability by owners and drivers.I’m talking about problems with the vehicle that will leave you stranded. During my research I found out that it’s now Toyota and Mercedes-Benz that’s roaming most parts of Africa now where it used to be LR. What happened? Mercedes-benz and Toyota are rated better reliability than LR.
why would you want a 4.5 v8 landcruiser they have no injector pump its electronic injection and the front was widened to fit the v8 so you have to buy aftermarket rear spacers to have wheels tracking inline front and rear. beuatiful engine though pity its really not a submarine. i see about 10 every day, all utes
If anyone is really interested in the pros and cons of LR ownership you should ask an owner or visit a LR forum. I have a series 1 (1949) and a series 3 (1976) and my experience has been quite different that what you have described.
Trust me, you are one of the fews who gotten a missed with these vehicles. There are many other drivers/owners who gotten a hit with the bad stuff like fuel pumps and engine/transmission problems. It’s either a hit or miss. But mostly hits.
I just dont understand about all the reliability problems with land rover?
I have a 200tdi defender with 225000 miles under it belt and I have had it for 10 yrs and never let me down.
We have a 2001 td5 disco with only a relay problem in the 8yrs of ownership and also a hi-cap td5 for work with 145000 on the clock with no problem yet apart from dual mass flywheel, it is used for heavy towing!
The only parts I have ever fitted is wearing parts like brakes, tires.
I service them regular.
It’s true like 4xforum said.Comfort, road holding and safety do matter to most drivers out there. These vehicles are driven on open roads to get to your off-road destination. I would choose the Landcruiser over a Defender anyday because of the reliability issues with the Land Rovers.Sure, they may perform a little better but the real question is will it leave me stranded? And sure the Defender made it up the steep hill climb the first try but it’s not like the Landcruiser didn’t make it at all.
These vehicles are driven on tar roads to get to the places they are driven off road. Road holding, comfort and safety DO matter to 99% of those who drive them. And I said, in some conditions, the LR is better, but lock the Cruisers lockers, and there is nothing in it. From, then, it is up to the drivers to make them perform better.
Land Rovers do rust… it’s just that they bodies don’t, but the chassis, especially around the spring hangers and the steel firewall rust just like any other vehicle. That said, their rust protection chassis coatings are better than Toyota’s. 4xforum

I drive nothing but THE BEST 4X4XFAR..
@theuwat. That why the U.N. only use Land Cruisers in the war area’s. and no land rovers

Meh, I always preferred the Troopy over the sedan.
I have an 89 RRC. with 200k miles on it. Still going strong.
