Wow…If this is real I think that there should be mandatory safety lessons given to everyone on how to put a vehicle into neutral. Yes more government intervention is requires to help save us from ourselves……or in this case save the rest of us from the incompetent drivers of the world. Since this is a capitalist society I can give a “Put it in Neutral Fool” clinic starting at $29.95 and up. Any Takers? I provide a graduation certificate at the end of the course as well. Phase 2 training involves throwing it into park…damn the tranny we choose life!

I do agree with you that many people do not know how to handle there vehicles in emergency situations,that is a given! This inherent electronic design flaw does NOTHING to prevent someone from simply putting the car in neutral. The electronic problem relates specifically to acceleration and braking. You are speaking out of ignorance, because you do not understand the difference between “electronic systems” (micro-chipsets with software embedded), and “electro-mechanical systems” which use mechanical linkages to activate servos and motors. If you did understand, you would know that what you’re saying is rubbish.

Why the hell not? There were four people in that car. Not one of them thought to put it in neutral or jam it into park. Why? Because they were in panic mode. Analysis Paralysis. They couldn’t take their attention away from the problem and look for a solution. This phenomenon has been well documented with pilots of doomed airliners. They become so consumed in the problem at hand, that they don’t see the big picture.

In the SDSD report made by his fellow officers they clearly blame the cause on the floor mat. As well in the same report they list a witness who drove the car 3 days before and had the gas stick on him – he wasn’t a cop. He reported it to the dealer quote: “I think its the mat” – they didn’t do anything.

Toyota know about this problem at least 4 year before this accident happened. If they cared about people’s lives more than making money, they might have given instructions on how to stop the car.
